Khariton Andreevich Chebotarev

Харитон Андреевич Чеботарев
1746–1815

The son of a sergeant, a native of Vologda. In 1755 he was admitted to the commoner division of the gymnasium of Moscow university and six years later became a student on a state allowance at the Philosophical Faculty, Moscow University. After graduation in 1764 he was appointed keeper of books in the university library. He became a professor, the first elected rector of the Moscow University, the first Chairman of the Moscow Society for History and Antiquities of Russia. He participated in the translation and preparation for printing of University textbooks, including the first Russian translation of "The Visible Light..." (“Vidimyi svet”) (1768) by Jan Amos Comenius. In 1769 he translated “The brief general history with <...> the addition of Russian history for the use of young students” (“Kratkaia vseobshchaia istoriia s prisovokupleniem k nei rossiiskoi istorii dlia upotrebleniia uchashchegosia iunoshestva”) by Hieronymus Freyer.
